This year, the stakes are ever higher at the Memorial, because it’s a designated event with a world-class field and $3.6 million going to the winner. And the a champion will be decided on a course that just a couple of years ago looked nothing like it does now.

Let’s rewind to 2019, which is when Nicklaus, whose Nicklaus Companies has built or renovated more than 400 courses worldwide, decided to put his final touches on the course he founded in 1974.

At first, Nicklaus told Chad Mark, the director of grounds operations at Muirfield, that he was thinking of redoing the greens. That led to a lengthy drive around the golf course — and lots more ideas.

Travel

“At the end of that trip he said, ‘You know what, I’m not getting any younger. I’d really like to do this,'” Mark said. “[He] started talking about fairway bunkers and greenside bunkers and regrassing the fairways and rebuilding tees, and how that relates to the Tour and how that relates to the members. … It’s going to be a chance for him to put his last touch on everything he wants to see here forever.”

Work started on the final day of the 2020 Memorial and was completed before the 2021 event returned.

“I don’t think when we are done with it it is going to be a tougher golf course, it’s just going to be a better golf course,” Nicklaus said during construction. “And that’s what I want, I want a better golf course for the membership.”

And how did it turn out?

“A different golf course,” Nicklaus said. “A totally different golf course. You’ll see it right away.”

That’s the basis of the discussion between GOLF Top 100 Teachers Mike Adams and Terry Rowles, who teamed up to present at last fall’s GOLF Top 100 Teacher Retreat.

As the video above shows, Adams and Rowles focus on the importance of using dynamic motion in the golf swing. This means allowing a player to use their natural athletic ability — as well as any physical restrictions — to achieve success on the golf course.

Instruction

Adams described the thought very bluntly, saying, “we have preferences. And we put our will on that student and we make them swing that way because this doesn’t fit ‘our eye’, so we make it fit our eye by moving them to look better.

“In our effort to make them look better, they hit it worse.”

The two provide examples of some of the top golfers in the world, showing the likes of Rory McIlroy and others, and how, on camera, their swings look ideal. Unfortunately, the results were inconsistent.

So go ahead and give the entire video a look to learn more about how dynamic motion can help improve your overall play. The insight from both Adams and Rowles is helpful for each player to remember a simple concept about the golf swing: That one size does not always fit all.

To help address that dilemma, Marty Jertson — a PING engineer — put together some helpful information during last fall’s GOLF Top 100 Teacher Retreat.

Jertson put together an informative (and in-depth) presentation exploring how both wind and aerodynamics impact a player’s shot selection. He broke things down into several categories like ball flight, ball performance, what optimal means, and, finally, whether a player should fight it, flight it, or ride the wind. For those wondering how to maneuver windy conditions, it’s a must watch.

Rules

Jertson goes on to explain how golf balls are tested, describing how robot-testing works.

“We can use a robot to do very controlled experiments, where we want to control impact location really well,” he says. “We might want to introduce water or moisture on to the golf ball, or between the ball and the club face to study friction.”

Next, Jertson poses a simple question: What are optimal launch conditions?

Adds Jertson: “As you go up in speed, you need to launch it lower with less spin. As you go down in speed, you need to launch it higher with more spin. But the problem with this [old formula] is that it didn’t fit all the outliers.”

But Parente’s creation is not just a novelty item — it also has some impressive capabilities when it comes to golf instruction.

At last fall’s GOLF Top 100 Teacher Retreat, Parente held a seminar where he exhibited how his robot’s tools can be used to quantify swing mechanics. If you’re a swing nerd, it’s well worth the watch.

Drivers

“[This robot] has potential from a biomechanical model standpoint,” Parente said. “We can replicate different types of launch conditions, different types of delivery conditions, different types of acceleration. And then more importantly, what the benefit is for you as instructors.”

Parente’s presentation lasted over an hour as he demonstrated all the capabilities of his sweet-swinging bot.

“I’m a big interactive guy,” he said. “I’m really honored to be here because you guys and gals are the boots on the ground. You’re the ones that are working with these students and understand it. I understand all the stuff conceptually. So your input, your questions, help me create tests that help you provide better data and better fitting information.”
